What advantages does SurTec 650 offer compared to conventional yellow chromating?

June 11, 2025

The most important advantage of SurTec 650 lies in the chromium(VI)-free formulation. While classic yellow chromates contain hexavalent chromium - a substance that is hazardous to the environment and health - SurTec 650 Toxicologically harmless and meets modern environmental and safety standards.

Despite the absence of chromium(VI), SurTec 650 achieves a Comparable corrosion resistance like yellow chromate and is therefore a real alternative, even for demanding applications. It also impresses with its

  • Colorless appearance for neutral or decorative applications
  • High process reliability and simple integration into existing production processes
  • Wide material compatibility (especially for aluminum alloys)

This solution therefore offers a future-proof solution for companies that want both legal conformity as well as technical performance want to harmonize.

Further FAQs on SurTec 650...

Yes, this chromating process is Especially for pre-treatment before powder coating and painting has been developed. The conversion layer produced improves the Wettability and adhesion of the subsequent coating.

The result: Uniform layer formation, high scratch resistance and improved durability of the final coating. The pre-treatment also ensures a stable bond between the substrate and coating in the event of temperature changes, moisture or mechanical stress.

In addition, SurTec 650 can be easily integrated into automated Spraying or dipping processes which makes it ideal for Series production with high repeat accuracy for example in industrial metal construction or in the production of components for vehicles and machines.

SurTec 650 is a chemical conversion process used on aluminum and aluminum alloys to create a corrosion-resistant, conductive and solderable surface. The layer thickness is around 80-100 nm or less than 1 µ. It is applied by dipping, spraying or wiping.

How the process works:

  • Chemical conversion process: SurTec 650 forms a thin, chemically converted layer on the aluminum surface, which consists of chromium(III) compounds.
  • Corrosion protection: This layer protects the aluminum from corrosion by creating a barrier against the environment.
  • Conductivity and solderability: The layer is conductive and solderable, which is important for various applications.
  • Liability for subsequent coatings: SurTec 650 improves the adhesion of paints, adhesives and sealants to the surface.
  • Environmental friendliness: The process is chromium (VI)-free and complies with the latest environmental protection directives.
  • Application: SurTec 650 is used in many industries, such as electronics, the automotive industry and aerospace.
